I havenโt seen a lot of talk about this, and I know weโre all emotionally/mentally exhausted in the USA with rights being stripped, but I think this is important. Sheโs a brave fucking woman, who is no longer allowed to speak for the people she represents.
Much like the Pearson and Jones expulsion, this is a flagrant move against democracy. However unlike P&J, she wasnโt expelled, just not allowed into the House meetings and not able to speak. She can vote, at least, butโฆthatโs not much in a republican majority.
There’s videos of her colleagues telling her she can’t occupy a public space outside of the chamber either. They stand menacingly around her and attempt to intimidate her into leaving the public area. In their formal letter, they claim that her “hate speech” (really she said that banning gender affirming care would put blood on their hands) would lead to more incidents like the Covenant school shooting. That’s a not so subtle way of saying transgender people are dangerous.
I live in her district. The queer community in Missoula just pulled together a massive 24 hour protest and celebration event in less than two days. Despite the shitty situation and rapid descent of our government further into fascism, the organizing power, community support, and trans and queer joy I have seen over the past few days gives me so much hope.
And this sick remix of speaker of the house Matt Regier ordering protesters to leave the galleries of the house (where they are legally allowed) right before telling the riot police to start arresting them.
One thing thatโs important: you have to pair your rage with defiant joy. Theyโre equally powerful.
(First 3 photos are mine; photo cred for the last two)
This entire shithole country needs to be up and arms about this literal fascist strategy.
This story happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
HAPPY STAR WARS DAY
The Force will be with you. Always.
sorry but it’s actually so horrific how little of a sense of community people have, how little regard they extend towards the other humans around them. killing people for being loud on the subway or turning around in your driveway. loading your gun and waiting at the door because a child ran your doorbell unexpectedly. ring cameras, neighborhoodapp, community watch group Facebook pages. you’ve assigned yourself the role of the one true peacekeeper and casted everyone else around you as a threat to be controlled. there’s no connection or love or compassion. just a deep distrust and hatred.
and the people who face the most significant consequences from this are the ones who are already deemed as outsiders. people of color, especially Black people, disabled people, people with mental illnesses, homeless people.
and so many people are willfully promoting this complete alienation from each other. the obsession with true crime, the hatred directed at children for existing in public spaces, the policing and controlling of where homeless people are allowed to be / what they’re allowed to do, the constant fearmongering about public transportation. you are building a society of FEAR. you are conditioning yourself to distrust everyone around you. you need to make an active, conscious effort to engage with the world and the life around you in a healthy manner.
